Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries maintain individual regulations governing monument height, setback distances from lot lines, permitted materials, and approved imagery. NJ Grave Monuments confirms the specific rules for every cemetery and section before design work begins, so the family sees a compliant design drawing from the start.

Foundation Requirements

Monument foundations in New Jersey must reach the frost line — approximately 36 to 42 inches below grade — to prevent the seasonal heaving that tilts improperly installed monuments. NJ Grave Monuments's installation crew prepares each foundation to the depth and method specified by the cemetery and sets every monument level before leaving the site.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Religious cemeteries in New Jersey carry denomination-specific design guidelines. Catholic cemeteries in Morris and Essex counties typically require a cross or religious figure. Jewish cemeteries in Bergen and Passaic counties often welcome Hebrew inscriptions while limiting figural imagery. Orthodox and Muslim sections may have additional restrictions or orientation requirements. NJ Grave Monuments builds these guidelines into every design from the first consultation.

Our Collection

Our Monuments (General) Collection

Grave Monument

NJ Grave Monuments grave monuments serve every form that New Jersey cemeteries accommodate. Upright monuments in die-base-cap construction are the traditional choice for most NJ cemetery sections — the die standing 20 to 36 inches, proportioned on a base that anchors it against frost cycles and capped to protect the inscription face. Slant monuments carry the same design at a lower profile for sections with height limits. Flat monuments lie at grade, required in many park-style sections. Bench monuments mark the grave while providing seating for family visitors. Companion grave monuments present two inscriptions as one unified piece. Family grave monuments carry larger dies with blank panels finish-matched and ready for future inscriptions. All are hand-carved from American-made granite — Barre Gray, India Red, Mahogany, or Black Galaxy — by NJ Grave Monuments artisans in Morris County, NJ.

Granite Options

NJ Grave Monuments offers four granite colors available across the complete monument line. Barre Gray provides the traditional cool silver tone suited to most NJ cemetery sections. India Red adds warmth and is effective on companion monuments. Mahogany provides deep burgundy presence. Black Galaxy offers vivid contrast for hand-carved lettering with gold mineral flecks visible in sunlight. All are American-made.

Custom Design Process

Every monument begins with a family-approved scaled design drawing. Our Morris County, NJ design team produces a precise illustration showing proportions, inscription layout, and any sculptural elements. Written family approval is required before any granite is ordered. Hand-carving, polishing, and assembly follow at our workshop. Our installation crew handles cemetery foundation preparation and monument placement throughout all 14 NJ counties.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

NJ Grave Monuments's monument process follows six steps. One: consultation — we meet with the family and confirm the cemetery's regulations. Two: design drawing — a scaled illustration is produced for written family approval before any stone is ordered. Three: granite selection — the slab is inspected at our Morris County workshop for quality. Four: hand-carving — artisans incise inscriptions and relief work using chisels and pneumatic tools, finishing each element for lasting definition. Five: polishing and assembly — mirror-finish polishing, matte sandblasting of carved areas, assembly and inspection. Six: installation — our crew prepares the foundation to New Jersey's frost depth, sets the monument level, and notifies the family.
